2022 Toyota Tundra Pickup Truck Review

December 2nd, 2021 by

As the first full-sized pickup truck manufactured by a Japanese company in North America, the Toyota Tundra has a strong pedigree. In 2020, it helped Toyota win Kelley Blue Book’s award for Best Truck Brand. Not to be outdone, the 2022 Tundra promises new features, robust powertrain options and dynamic off-roading features that leave truck-lovers anxiously awaiting its December debut.

Trims and Starting Prices

The 2022 Tundra will start at $37,645 and come in six trims:

  • SR
  • SR5
  • Limited
  • Platinum
  • 1794 Edition
  • TRD Pro

Even the entry-level SR has earned a stellar review from Car and Driver for coil-spring multi-link rear suspension and a 379-horsepower twin turbo V-6 engine, a configuration capable of towing 12,000 pounds before any add-ons.

New Features for the 2022 Tundra

While the Tundra hasn’t seen much of an overhaul since its 2007 debut, the 2022 changes that with exciting interior and exterior redesigns.

On the outside, Toyota has added new suspension, panoramic moonroofs, power rear windows and damage-resistant, rustproof beds made from aluminum-reinforced composites.

In the cabin, drivers will find a 14-inch multimedia display, one of the biggest in its segment, with wireless Apple and Android capabilities. For drivers wanting a cozy ride, there will be options for leather-trimmed heated and ventilated seats.

Powertrain Options and Drivability

Keeping with those exciting new features, Toyota also delivers power with two new engine options.

While the standard i-Force 3.5-liter V6 comes with plenty of strength, the i-Force Max amps it up with a 437-horsepower hybrid V6 engine that provides 583 lb.-ft. of torque.

Paired with advanced off-road packages and four-wheel drive, the 2022 Tundra goes anywhere it’s needed. Available multi-terrain-select and crawl control systems ensure no road, path, plain or incline is too much for this energetic pickup truck.

Toyota doesn’t compromise efficiency for power and maneuverability. On rear-wheel drive models, the 2022 Tundra is expected to get 18 miles-per-gallon in the city and 24 on the highway. Four-wheel drive options will only get one mile-per-gallon less.

Ultimate Off-roading: TRD Pro

Every 2022 Tundra model comes with exciting new features and won’t leave you wanting for power, but the TRD Pro trim is perfect for off-road warriors. While it comes standard with four-wheel drive, an i-Force Max V6 engine and terrain-tackling systems, it’s also decked out with some tough equipment.

Off-road FOX shocks and an aluminum skid plate make rocky road trips run smoothly. In the backcountry, the forged alloy wheels and all-terrain tires keep the rubber on the ground. With electronic locking rear differential systems, 2022 Tundras keep slipping and getting stuck to a minimum.
