Which Toyota Is Better: The 2021 Corolla or Camry?
Did you know that in the US, the Toyota Camry was the top-selling passenger car in 2019? Not only that, but it’s always been one of the best-selling cars of this automotive brand.
However, Toyota’s known for having a strong line of cars. So there’s more to them than the Camry. For instance, there’s also the Corolla you should consider if you’re getting a new car.
So are you wondering which is better: the 2021 Corolla or Camry? Then read on. We’ll outline all the pros and cons of each vehicle so you can choose the best one for you.
About the 2021 Corolla
The 2021 Toyota Corolla is a vehicle that seats 5 people, and comes as a sedan or hatchback.
You’ll get 6 trims with this car: L, LE, LE (hybrid), SE, XLE, and XSE. You’ll pay anywhere between just shy of $20,000 to over $23,500, depending on what you want with the vehicle.
Powertrain
With this vehicle, you’ll get 2 options for the powertrains:
- 1.8L 4-cylinder (139 HP, 126 lb-ft of torque)
- 2.0L 4-cylinder (169 HP, 151 lb-ft of torque)
There is also an option for a hybrid powertrain, but this is only available with the sedan.
Fuel Economy
The Toyota Corolla 2021 has great fuel economy. With the non-hybrid trims, you’ll get around 30 MPG in the city and 40 MPG on the highway.
As for the hybrid powertrain, you’ll get around 53 MPG in the city and 52 MPG on the highway.
As you can see, whether you choose the hybrid or non-hybrid trims, you won’t have to spend a fortune on fuel. This makes the 2021 Corolla excellent on your wallet.
Cargo Space
An important factor to consider when purchasing a vehicle is its cargo space. This is especially important if you plan on transporting lots of your family members and/or friends.
The 2021 Corolla gets 13 cubic feet of cargo space. You also have the option of getting the (no-cost) Enhanced Cargo Space to expand that to 23 feet. As for the hatchback, it gets 18 cubic feet of cargo space in the back.
While it’s a pretty tight squeeze, you’ll be able to fit your vacation bags in there.
Safety
This car comes standard with a few safety features. They include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
However, the 2020 version of this vehicle received an overall rating of 5 out of 5 from the NHTSA. It also received 5 stars for its front star rating and side star rating. This car received a 4 out of 5 for the rollover star rating.
In addition to these ratings, the 2020 Toyota Corolla was also named as a top safety pick by the IIHS.
All of these great ratings indicate that the 2021 model will only bring better things to the table.
About the 2021 Camry
The Toyota Camry 2021 is also a sedan, meaning it seats 5 as well. It has 5 trims available: LE, SE, XLE, XSE, and TRD. The estimated MSRPs of these range from $26,000 to $32,000.
Powertrain
With the 2021 Camry, you’ll also have 2 options for the powertrain:
- 2.5L 4-cylinder (202 to 206 HP)
- 3.0L V6 (301 HP)
Like with the Corolla, you have a hybrid powertrain option as well.
Fuel Economy
Toyota never ceases to amaze drivers with their vehicles’ fuel economy. The 2021 Camry is no exception.
With the base powertrain, you’ll get 28 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway. The other powertrain gives you 27 MPG in the city and 38 MPG on the highway.
Cargo Space
For the 2021 Toyota Camry, it gets 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space. Considering the average sedan has about 15 cubic feet of trunk space, this is on par with other vehicles.
Safety
Toyota is known for producing extremely safe cars. This means that all the standard safety features you’ll find with the 2021 Corolla, you’ll also find in the 2021 Camry.
The NHTSA also hasn’t rated this vehicle yet. However, the 2020 model also received 5 out of 5 for its overall safety rating.
Like with the 2020 Toyota Camry, the 2020 Corolla was also named as a top safety pick by the IIHS. For overall frontal crash, side crash, and rollover ratings, it earned 5 stars across the board.
Again, all the above show that the 2021 Camry will be extremely safe for you and your passengers.
Pros and Cons of Each
As you can see from the above information, the 2021 Toyota Corolla has 1 more trim option than the Camry. However, this shouldn’t matter too much, as you’ll still be able to pick the right trim and options to create the perfect vehicle to drive.
While both vehicles get good fuel economy, the Corolla slightly beats the Camry, although not by much. But if you want to count every penny when it comes to paying for fuel, then you’ll want to go with the 2021 Corolla.
If cargo space is extremely important to you, then you might want to go with the 2021 Corolla. Its Enhanced Cargo Space option that comes free is definitely worth it if you want to get plenty of room in the trunk.
Lastly, as far as safety goes, you can’t go wrong when you pick either car. You can count on Toyota to keep you safe, no matter which vehicle you’re in.
